The department of Zoology was started in the year 1946 along with Botany and Chemistry as a part of the upgradation of KKC Intermediate college to KKC degree College. Sri V. R. Mishra started the department as its first In-charge. He later on also worked as Principal of the college from 1962 – 67. After him, Dr. Ramesh Gupta took over the reins of department in 1962 and remained in this position for more than 30 years. Dr. Ramesh Gupta also wrote a book “Modern Zoology” which is till date the most useful Zoology book for intermediate as well as medical preparatory examination throughout the country. During his tenure there was a massive expansion of the department and number of teachers rose to 11 with approval from the government.
The department has seen many a notable faculty including Sri. R. C. Pandey, Sri. K. L. Kapoor, Sri. G. K. Chakravorty, Dr. N. Bajpai, Dr. R. C. Misra, Dr. S. S. Lal, Dr. V. K. Jain, Dr. R. K. Shukla, Dr. R. K. Dwivedi and Dr. K. K. Tripathi. Presently the department is headed by Dr. Pushpa Vishwakarma who works in the field of Fisheries and is an alumnus of the University of Lucknow. At present the department has Associate Professor Dr. V. K. Dwivedi and Assistant Professors Dr. Neetu Mittal, Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Sri C. N. Saxena and Dr. Aseem Umesh. Dr. Anand Kumar and Dr. Jyotsana Gaur have also worked in this department for a long time under Part-time scheme.
The infrastructure of the department includes an impressive museum with a large collection of specimens, two UG laboratories, one smart classroom, two lecture theatres, a Staff Room, an office and a departmental library. Two new laboratories are been completed in order to apply for PG course in the future. The department teachers use ICT and lecture method for teaching. The department also organizes tours within city and around for exposure of its students about natural ecosystems and wildlife.
